This pedal was designed using cascaded JFET transistors to simulate the overdrive/distortion created by pushing a tube amp into natural breakup. The Ember will delilver various sounds from fat, open growl at low gain to tight, compressed overdrive when pushing the gain to max. The controls, as explained below, are very effective towards molding the tone to your tastes. The Ember will also deliver its highly dynamic feel across the board.
*Compared to the Helios, which was opamp based and delivered a very smooth preamp type of overdrive, the Ember is a more open, raw overdrive that you can really dig into while still having a controlled feel or smoothness.
Sets the output level.
Adjusts the amount of gain. Sets how much signal is sent through from the first stage of the circuit to the final two. The overall range of overdrive could be considered slightly more than medium when maxing the Burn control.
This is a tone control that when turned down will mellow out the tone by rolling off the high end. Turning it up will push the upper mids and highs while adding a little bit of sizzle with the Burn knob turned up.
This control sets how much body there is in the signal. Depending on pickup selection, you can fatten up the bridge, thin out the neck, or find a balanced medium. Higher settings will add more gain since more overall signal is fed through to the following stages. This could allow be thought of as a bass control.
*The Burn, Glow, and Warmth controls are interactive with each other for setting the overall tone of the pedal.
Glow Adjust Switch:
There is an internal slide which adjusts the location of the Glow control in the circuit. In the default position ("up"), the control is located before the second gain stage. This setting allows for the widest range of the control and change in the tone. When in the "down" position, the control is moved to after the second gain stage. This lessens the overall effect of the Glow control and will add more gain to the output since the second stage is being hit harder. It also adds a little more dynamic feel to your string response.
Output JFET Adjust:
There is an internal trim pot that can be used to adjust the bias of the output JFET stage. This allows you to tailor the sound of the overdrive a bit. The transistor is normally biased midway to give the most overall response and volume. Adjusting the trimpot clockwise will yield a tighter, compressed sound with a little bit of overall volume loss. Going counter-clockwise will give you a more open, loose-ended type of overdrive.
